Some Reasons Why to Fly Electric Rc

May 9, 2008

What are the advantages of electrically powered model aircraft compared to Internal Combustion (IC) engine powered model aircraft (maybe glow or diesel)?

1. Noise.
Especially for the (IC) engine, it’s will produce very noisy than the electric motors. As we know that (IC) engine in it’s operating, have some process, and it it explotions in it’s cylinder heat, so there are many engine manufacture give some part called engine muffler.Electric motors create very little noise even at maximum revolutions. Small electric model RC aircraft may be flown in urban parks and in gymnasiums without causing a disturbance due to noise. The same cannot be said for (IC) powered models.

2. Consistency.
The electric motors will produse more consistent and stable power result as the output, cause it’s supplied with a stable electric current. For (IC) engine, it will have more effect by only the humidity.

3. Reliability.
This attribute relates to most of the other advantages listed here. Simply put, it means if you apply an electric current to an electric motor 10,000 different times, it will, with great probability, operate each time.

4. Maintenance.
Electric motors have very few moving parts. There are only minimal contact points to produce friction so lubrication is not a major concern. An (IC) engine must be lubricated at all times of operation. The lubricant for model (IC) engines is mixed into the fuel and expelled after the fuel is burned which can cause an oily mess.

5. Vibration.
The simple explanation is the (IC) engine will give more vibration than electric motors. Because the (IC) engine produce the power by the piston moving, and cause the explosion so the piston can move again, so we can say that it’s must be produce more vibration, cause if we talk it more, we will say that at the piston moving cauese by the explotion in the cylinder head, there are some force working on it.
6. Efficiency.
This for the comparation, Electric motors with carbon brushes operate at efficiencies of 67% and electric brush-less motors operate at 90% efficiency, and This is very good

7. Versatility.
Very easy to used in almost model applications without very much modification such as:
sport flying, aerobatics, racing, helicopters, ducted fan jets, scale, float planes and micro size aircraft.

8. Miscellaneous notes.
We can use gear for electric motor to swing large propellers, but (IC) engines are more difficult. Because electricity maybe obtained from different sources such as your electric utility, gas generators, solar cells, wind generators and the emerging field of fuel cell generators, it is less restricted in distribution and can be generated from renewable sources.
